Brunton over the hill?

Written by Squiffinator at 15:44 28/7-2015

In less than 2 seasons, Bret Brunton, easily Squiffinators best ever rider, has gone from top of the world to being lost in mediocrity. After spending a number of seasons as Canada's best rider, by a wide margin, he only sits at #5 in Canada over all. There have been no wins since Luxembourg - Vianden at the beginning of season 32 and the best so far is 2 second places. Support rider Jason Stockford has finished closely behind Brunton on two of those races... is it time to pass the torch?

At 30, you'd think Bret still has quite a bit of racing left. His skills are declining but that wily experience should compensate, right? The evidence would suggest otherwise.

A compounding problem is no doubt the lack of CB races in Division 3. This is a crappy division to get stuck in if for a what has become essentially a specialist CB team. (Even the young sprint leadouts have been trained in CB to help on those races.)

So the question is.. when is your captain too old? Is it time to let the likes of Jason Stockford, Timothy Neilsen and Wyatt Doig take over the captain roles, letting Brunton, Trickey and Hulsey step back and play the role of road captain and support?

Agreed. When you consider the investment in training a rider to almost 100, you need to get many seasons out of him. It took him having "good legs" to pull off 2nd place in Antwerpen - Huy G3 today. Jason Stockford finished 15th as a support rider without anything special (no good legs, super legs). Doesn't that decide it?

It would nice to see a change to make older riders a little more viable.

Super Velo at 18:32 29/7-2015
It really is sad to see this happen to such a good rider. Too bad OCM isn't more like RL where most of the the top riders that reach 30, 32 and better keep on getting results. In OCM reaching age 28 means you get relegated to team mate or released where the rider can hope to be a trainer when he gets to 36. Pretty sad when you think about it.

cheers guys. I am thinking stick with Brunton for this season and switch over to Stockford starting next. I am right on the edge of div 2 so if I can pop up at the right time, I can get into some D2 races.

Rigana at 16:01 28/7-2015
Stockford might be the better option. Although I think Brunton should still do well for a season or so. I had a great season with Damiano at age 30, not so good this season at 31 though.

Cloud Atlas at 15:50 28/7-2015
Bad spell and yes Division 3 is cobble purgatory.. hope you can make it back to Zyte soon and restart the Brunton/Kirby Ussery rivalry
